2019 promises to be a year of exciting retail possibilities

Our latest Retail Radar report shows that retailers are feeling generally positive. However, there’s pressure on household budgets, and that is likely to continue impacting consumer spending during 2019. We know that retailers are continuing to tighten their belts too.

But we think there’s going to be lots of opportunity for retailers, and a bit of a need to consider market positioning, in response to the arrival of new global players, such as Ikea. For local Kiwi firms, there are opportunities to differentiate, and look to grow. Customers want to interact with brands digitally and that means that the future is digitally-enabled.

The challenge, of course, is to de-commoditise your business, to build brand equity around your products, and to drive customer loyalty. It’s key to stay ahead of best practice and keep up with trends and market developments.

I’m pleased to let you know that Retail NZ is here to help you to do that. We have partnered with Conferenz to put on the NZ Retail Summit, to be held at SkyCity in Auckland on 23 July. There will be lots on offer at this meeting place for everyone in the retail game, and I expect it will be well-attended, by smaller retailers, those working in larger businesses, e-tailers and omnichannelists! Everyone’s welcome, and I hope to see you there.

The other exciting news is that entries are now open for the Retail NZ Awards 2019, which will recognise the very best of Kiwi retailing. No matter what kind or size of business you’re in, I hope you’ll consider entering for the opportunity to be recognised and lauded as one of the best Kiwi retailers. We’ll also see a return of the ever-popular People’s Choice category, so your customers will have an opportunity to vote for you. Entering awards might seem daunting, but it’s well worth the effort. It can help boost staff morale engagement, and allow you to be recognised for what you do. The winners will be announced at the Retail NZ Summit Gala Dinner and Awards night on 23 July – but get your entries in now, because they close on 25 March.
